Question: How many years far back can the taxes be audited?
Hi,
In India, how many years far back can the IT Dept. audit our filed tax returns? In US, for instance, IRS can audit any return filed in the last three years. Which means that we are recommended to store the tax records for the last three years in the US. I wanted similar information on India.

May I request the answer givers to please provide with a source of their information (like the appropriate IT Act section). Reason being that so far we are seeing conflicting information from the answer givers. Thanks.
Answer: In India, if the department wants to verify the accounts, then they may go back till 6 years.
