IRS Home Office Deductions

Question: Home Office Deduction and mileage question?

Let’s say I live in Riverside, California and my new work is in San Diego so that’s about 100 miles away. I rent an apartment in San Diego to stay while I work during the weekday and I go back home on the weekends. I have a home office in my rental apartment that I use to do work.

1. Can I write off the rental as lodging expenses?

2. Can I write off the home office even though I don’t own the apartment? The IRS only says home but what about people who don’t own a home but rent?

3. Can I write off the mileage from the apartment to the company?

4. I can’t write off the mileage from San Diego to Riverside because that’s commute right?

Thanks!

Answer: 1. No. Your tax home moved when your job did and you can’t deduct the cost of either home.

2. Yes, it is possible to write off a home office when you rent. of course you have to qualify and you won’t, but that’s a separate issue.

3. No. See #1.

IRS office in Richmond ready to help taxpayers
