IRS Appraisal Form

Question: Musical instruments donated to a school – IRS form 8283?

In 2007 I donated a total of 7 violins and misc accessories to an elementary school. This was on two separate occasions (in the same year) and I received two acknowledgement letters from the school, both stating their opinion of the total value, which they said was about $1200 or $1300. I have no issue with that, and it’s fair and likely as correct as anyone could expect. I plan to use IRS 8283 and none of the individual violins had a value of over $500, so am I correct in assuming I would only use the first page of form 8283? The second page appears to deal strictly with items over $5000 in value and therefore the form requires much more information and an appraisal. I’m just looking to do the right thing up front is all. Thanks in advance.

Answer: You are correct. Keep the documentation for backup.

Question: Innoncent spouse tax relief for hubby?

2 yrs b4 I met hubby I file taxes and received EIC for my 2 adopted sisters. Theses girls are the great nieces of my mom and when my mom took sick, I took care of ALL of them (mom and 2 girls). I received a refund for all of them for about 2 years in a row, but then in year 3, i was told that the rules had changed and I was no longer able to claim the girls and I needed to refund the $ I received. When I got married 2 years later, the IRS took my husbands $$ because of what I owed. This year I’d like for him to file for innoncent spouse relief but I’m soooo unclear as to where to start…and is he not entitled to the $ they kept from him last year……FYI….I’ve tried going through the appeals process on my behalf, HOWEVER, the gov claims they sent a form to me to fill out, but I did not respond….I’ve filled out EVERYTHING and RETURNED what they’ve sent me (all sent by certified mail) however, they CLAIM a form was sent (NOT certified), that I never returned & CASE DISMISSED

Answer: Do you still owe money to the IRS? Apparently you do if you’re still worried about it this year.

Your husband needs to complete the form at the link below and attach it to your income tax return. HIS portion of any refund you two are due will be sent to him. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8379.pdf

To attempt to recover any amount they withheld from him in error LAST YEAR, you need to complete the following form and mail it with the required documentation to the IRS.
