Question: How do you track an old IRS refund that was never received?
My boyfriend never submitted his 2006 taxes, so last year in the beginning of 2007 we submitted them, hoping for the best, however we never received anything, and the refund was supposed to be around $1000. Just recently he received a state refund check of $21.00 from Mi for the 2006 tax year, which makes me think that the IRS actually did get his tax info, but I have no idea how to track it down to see if they actually did.
Does anyone know how to find this, and if I can do it online, or if he has to call the IRS and try to track it through them. Thanks!
Answer: When the US Treasury realizes that your refund check has not been cashed, they will hold it for 12 months, if the check has not been claimed after that year, it goes to a department called “unclaimed property”.
I believe if you go to the IRS web site there is somewhere to click for unclaimed property. There is a form you must fill out to prove your identity and it takes about six months to get the check. It is there waiting for you………..good luck
The waiting game
Since 2003, taxpayers have been able to use the IRS’ ” Where’s My Refund? ” Web page to track down refunds directly from their own computers. But exactly when you need this service depends on how you filed your return. Processing times differ for paper and electronically filed 1040s.
