Question: If we both claimed the same child, is there a way to speed up our returns?
My ex-boyfriend wrongfully claimed our daughter on his taxes (I win the tiebreaker rules to claim her, see my other questions) and my efile got rejected. I paper filed and am waiting for the next step. The lady at the IRS said that we will both get a form with a chance to amend our returns. Then if neither of us do that we will both get audited. If I can get him to file an amendment will I get my refund any faster? I don’t want to communicate with him unless it will benefit me
We did talk about this beforehand. I pointed out all the tie-breaker rules and he assured me that he wasn’t going to try to claim her….but he’s a liar!
Answer: If he files an amended return dropping the claim for the child it MAY speed up your refund slightly. Amended returns generally take 8 to 12 weeks to process when filed during tax time. The IRS might allow your exemption claim before completing processing of his amended return though I have no first-hand information to confirm that. In most cases when 2 or more taxpayers claim the same dependent it is mid to late summer before any refunds are released.
