Question: Is the irs notification service@irs.gov. a real web sight?
I received an e-mail from them, wanting me to fill out a refund form . not sure if i should open it
I thank everyone for there answers.they were very helpful.
Answer: The IRS never uses e-mail to communicate with taxpayers. It’s a scam designed to look “official.”
Scams!
The top rip-offs you should avoid Scams have been around since snake oil was invented. But consumer advocates say that scams have taken a particularly nasty turn thanks to two recent trends: new technologies that allow anonymous scammers to create fake relationships with their marks, and the downturn in the economy, which encourages cash-strapped people to do desperate things—like wiring money …

IRS W4 Form
Question: W4 Allowances Section?
My wife earns 57600 a year. I earn 33000 a year. We don’t have children or any other dependents. What do we put in each of ours W4 forms for allowances claimed? I currently have 2 on my W4 allowances since she wasn’t employed(due to grad school) until recently. Do I make any changes to my W4 allowances section? Do I put a zero in there? My wife put zero in hers as we both aren’t dependent really and work fulltime. I am just not too sure. Even IRS web site doesn’t answer my questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Answer: If she just recently started working, you are probably OK for 2009. But you’d be wise to change to zero soon, definitely before the end of the year, or next year you will very likely owe. The worksheets will indicate you could each claim one, but the tables don’t work real well for two income couples who both make a decent amount. Also, one or more likely both of you should file your W-4 as married but withhold at the higher single rate, not simply as married.

Tax Audit And Tax Investigation
Question: if one is being audited by the state, does the state also notify the irs?
the lady who does my parents’ taxes is being criminally investigated for fraud. because of this, the state is auditing their taxes, along with all her other clients. because of the nature of this investigation, will the state eventually notify the irs, leaving them (my parents and her other clients) open to be audited federally?
Answer: State and Federal authorities frequently exchange notes so they should plan on it. Most states base the state tax liability on the Federal return as a starting point so any changes will have to be reported to the IRS as well.
