Question: MySpace to distribute Amber Alerts?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070123/ap_on_hi_te/myspace_amber_alerts

I applaud MySpace for trying to make thier site safer for their users. But I really think the parents should take most of the blame. All these lawsuits against MySpace and how thier they are responsible cause some poor kid met up with a child predator and gets assaulted. Do blame the mail guy cause he brings you an audit slip from the IRS?

At some point you have say, did you(the parents) ever think to check your kids account? who theyve been talking to? You know that kind of stuff can and will happen and in this day and age, you have to monitor your kids internet usage and warn them of the dangers. Its just like with drugs, alcohol and sex… you have to let them know.

What are your thoughts and opinions on the MySpace article and do you feel that they are doing enough?!

Answer: Very well said, I have to agree with most of it.

I have noticed that over the years when I have joined some things similar to myspace there are limits on the age of people who can create accounts. If I am correct, you must be fourteen to have a myspace account. This is because otherwise, parental consent is required on the basis of assuming that people over that age are more mature and responsible in how they use the internet – and are probably fully aware of it’s true dangers. The point here is, many young teens aged put their age as being several years older anyway, in order to ‘be cool’ and part of the ‘scene’. In my opinion, fourteen is not an old enough age for sites like myspace… 16 would probably work out better

This is probably one of the main reasons that they end up in trouble anyway. Lying only causes trouble, and acting older etc… sometimes entices preadators further in their pursual of young girls, and even boys. Parents should know what sites their children are viewing, and there should be more advertising of the seriousness in all of this.

Equally, I do not think that the companies involved with hosting the sites should not be blamed in any way. They are simply letting friends share photos and news of events in their lives. They do not do the crime and they do not promote it. Those who join enter into a contract with the company that they should obey. Thus, the younger people pretending to be older(as previously stated) will be unable to claim anything from the company anyway and the accused will end up having to explain themselves to the person they assaulted and no one else.

Host sites are only third parties. There isn’t much that they can do, but everyone definitely needs a better warning of the dangers involved! It can happen to anyone!
