Question: How do I get an accounting job without much experience?
I have a Bachelors in Business from 1998 with almost 9 years of experience as a paralegal. I got my accounting degree last December (2008). I have not been able to find a job because most of them require 1-2 years of experience. The only experience I have is from a 3 month part time job that I had this past summer (in addition to my full time job). I did payroll and accounts payable. Because I have been in the work world for quite some time and own a home, etc, I can’t afford to take much of a pay cut. Payroll and AP/AR clerks don’t make that much per hour. Plus, I want something in accounting that really requires a degree (audit, tax, etc). Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Register with a couple of employment agencies that deal with accounting. Keep networking with friends and family. And attend job fairs when possible.
