Question: What tax program to use?

Last year(for 2007) my husband and I used H&R Block like we usually do. We file jointly, I do not work, and we have our 23 year old daughter living with us. We help pay her tuition. We do not own a house, all our cars are paid off, and we only have one credit card. In short, it seems we don’t need to be filing a lot of forms since all that was used for 2007 was my husband’s W-2’s.

Last year(for 2007) we used forms 8879, 1040A, and 540 C1.

Could we use a free online tax program like the IRS has? We’d like to save the $189.00 we feel we wasted last year at H&R Block. Not that there’s anything wrong with H&R Block, we just don’t think we need to use them anymore.

Answer: Try TaxCut, the software by H&R Block. I’ve been using it for years, and converted to it from TurboTax because it costs less.

If your situation is REALLY simple, you can prepare your return for free and file it for free with eFile.

As your situation gets more complex, it starts to cost a bit, but the most complex tax situation requiring the deluxe (all the forms, bells and whistles) tops out at $49.95.

If your daughter turned 23 before January 1, then you can’t claim her this year, so that simplifies your situation even more.
