IRS Form 1040-es Payment Voucher

Question: what the heck are the 2009 form 1040-ES payment vouchers for on Turbotax? I have to pay the 1040-V?

I got a form for one lump sum amount as a payment voucher to send into the IRS, but then I have about (4) 1040-ES forms too with different dates due on each form. The 4 vouchers say 2009 1040-ES on them, but the one for this year 1040-V payment voucher (lump sum amount) says 2008.

I am confused! Are the 2009 vouchers obsolete if paying in a lump sum on the 1040-V for 2008?

Answer: The 1040-ES are for your estimated tax payments. Since you owe tax this year, you should make quarterly payments during 2009, so that when you file taxes next year you won’t owe (or will owe a minimum amount). If you do not make estimated payments and you owe tax again next year, you will have to pay penalties.

The skinny on paying estimated taxes

If you have income that isn’t subject to withholding taxes , then you probably should be paying estimated taxes. It doesn’t matter whether the untaxed money comes from a job, investments, alimony or prizes you’ve won.
