Temporary IRS Jobs

Question: Will they give me the 2 weeks off? Please read more!?

I got a temporary position at the IRS which I am starting in less than 2 weeks. My husband is in Iraq and gets his R&R, (2 week leave), in mid to late March.

Of course I will want the two weeks off, unpaid of course, but I will still want the job when he goes back to Iraq. When should I mention this to my supervisor? Do you think they will understand and give me the 2 weeks off and allow me to come back to work?

I want to be able to use this job on a resume later and I think it would be a great reference. I am just worried they won’t allow me the weeks off so I will basically have to quit.

Any advice, opinions, suggestions, or experience with this kind of situation would help. Thanks!
You would think given the circumstances they would allow this. Like I said it is only a temporary position that will only last about 5 months.

Answer: The IRS is a governmental agency – your supervisor may have been in the military, and probably has lots of contacts who were in Vietnam. Those guys were really treated terribly after all they gave for us to live free here!

Maybe all that will play into it and you’ll get the time off to spend time with your hero. If I was your boss, you’d have it. On the other hand, getting 2 weeks off at the IRS in March is a little like taking a temp job for the winter at Macy’s and asking for the week before Christmas off… It is bad timing for that particular job.

BTW – I read your other posts about where to take him… has he said he wants beach and ocean? Ask him, because he might have had enough of sand and sun for a while. In March, I think there would still be snow-skiing in resorts that offer that. Or maybe a secluded mountain cabin resort with views of trees… just a thought.

IRS Phone Numbers For Refunds

IRS Phone Numbers For Refunds

Question: Stimulus/Rebate Question…?

I did my taxes in early February and my last two numbers of my SSN are “00″. I chose to have my refund direct deposited. I also chose to have the fee for the direct deposit option deducted from my refund. The direct deposit from Turbo Tax was processed by “Santa Barbara Bank”, a third party. On my bank statement, it says…

“TAX REFUND PER RALDEPT XXXXX8300″.

I have yet to receive my stimulus by direct deposit, even though the website says May 2nd for me.

I read of the IRS website that if I chose to have the fees for direct deposit deducted from my refund, that I would be converted to a paper check.

Is this information accurate? Is this why I haven’t received a direct deposit yet? …Thanks for your help.

(I am asking here because I can’t get through to the IRS by phone.)

Answer: Tax Rebate

The federal government is sending each and every one of us a $600 rebate.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.

If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.

If we purchase a computer it will go to India.

If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.

If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan.

If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan…

and none of it will help the American economy.

The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes, weed, beer, and tattoos, since these are the only products still produced in the USA.

Thank you for your help & please support the US.

IRS help line sets low bar for service

Need help with your taxes? Good luck reaching someone at the Internal Revenue Service. Three out of 10 people who call the toll-free help line this tax season won’t get through to a human being – and that’s if the agency meets its goals for service. Callers lucky enough to reach a representative will have to wait on hold an average of nearly 12 minutes, a level of service deemed unacceptable in …

IRS W2 Form Request

Question: How do you request a refund of over-withheld social security tax?

I quit my job in 2/2008. I received a signing bonus when I started in 6/2007. When I left I had to repay my bonus. As such, my employer issued a W2-C which reflected lower social security and medicare taxes. I requested a refund from the employer of the overpaid FICA and Medicare taxes, but they refused to refund it. They stated that because it was paid in the previous year, I would have to request it directly from the IRS. I filled out a form 843 and requested a refund from the IRS. They have denied my request and told me to go back to my employer. The IRS states that 843 can only be used to refund “excess” social security tax above the maximum amount that can be withheld in a tax year. I cannot seem to find any information covering my situation. Can someone help?

Answer: Two issues.

1. Your company did this wrong. They weren’t supposed to give you a W2C as you did in fact receive the money in 2007. They were supposed to give you proof that you repaid the bonus.

2. You were supposed to get a refund of the excess INCOME taxes paid by putting the bonus repayment down as an itemized expense or as a payment credit (only possible if you repaid more than $3000) on your 2008 tax return. Since you didn’t repay the money until 2008, this is a 2008 tax issue, not a 2007 issue.

3. Repayments in a different year don’t get you a refund of fica/mc. The amount when it was withheld wasn’t in error, so form 843 won’t work. (Although I suspect the company is going to try to file their own 843 to get their 1/2 back…though on an audit, the IRS should deny them the money as well…oddly, though, if they pull this off, they will have both halves, yours and theirs.)
