TaxWatch: Tax moves to make in January

The tax laws are still in flux. We’re waiting for the estate-tax law to be written, and Form 5405 for the home-buyer’s credit isn’t ready yet. To top it off, IRS started the year by announcing a major step-up in enforcement of tax preparers. This is going to be an interesting tax season. Are you ready?

Irs Audit Jobs

Irs Audit Jobs

Question: I got a certified letter from the IRS?

My husband got a notice that the mail lady tried to deliver a certifed letter from the IRS (well, actually the line marked Large envelope is marked) and we have to pick it up Monday. It is going to drive me nuts over the weekend, so I was wondering if anyone may have any ideas as to what could be in there? I already filed my taxes in February and got the refund as well. Could it be an audit, even though they already sent the refund? I have no idea what we would be getting audited over as my husband works only one job and we have no other income.
I just wanted to add that is the first letter we have ever gotten from them. There have been no others that were ignored, that is why this is so odd to me.

Answer: It’s not usually GOOD news, but no point in worrying until you pick it up and see what it’s about. If it’s bad news, you’d normally have gotten a couple other notices from the IRS before they sent something certified mail.

Even if you are getting audited, if you have nothing to hide you’ll be fine, it’s just maybe a pain to dig out all the documentation they’d ask for.

Good luck.

IRS Installment Agreement Form

IRS Installment Agreement Form

Question: I owe back taxes for 2004 and 2006 to the IRS and I defaulted on my installment agreement several times?

they sent me a letter stating they would not renew my installment agreement but sent me a form saying they may draft from my bank account if I fill it out and send it in. Will they accept the form to draft if I put 1500/Mo and I owe them 24k and if not how long before they levy/lien and what else can the do to me? I am a mother of four and do not want to get my home taken or go to jail. I sent them 1500 and want to pay them.

Answer: Call IRS immediately at 1-800-829-0922 or 1-800-829-7650 to set up the Direct Debit Installment Agreement, and if you can’t pay $1500 per month then complete form 433-F Collection Information Statement and IRS will tell you what payment you can afford.
IRS is not going to send you to jail. IRS will place lien or levy;s, or garnish your wages. Just don’t IGNORE IRS, they will work with you.

Tax Attorney Or Cpa

Tax Attorney Or Cpa

Question: New employee can not get a passport due to not filing taxes for 6 years. Who should he talk to to get clear?

Should he be talking to a cpa, tax attorney or accountant? He might not have the money to pay the whole thing I am do not plan to underwrite him but I need him to be able to travel to complete his job or I will have to let him go. Suggestions on what to do because he is a very good employee who just made some wrong choices and now is so deep in he does not know how to handle it to get out from underneath the mess he created.

Answer: A good accountant should be able to help him straighten out what he owes the IRS and submit his back taxes and file. It might run 500 – 1000. But maybe you can fit the bill or part of it to help him get his act back together. Don’t give up on him. Sounds like your a caring boss. They might garnish some of his wages but they will most likely be able to set up a long term payment options.
