Question: What is the proper response to an IRS summons?

The summons is for collection information statement

Answer: Kind of depends on your current status with them. I would check with my accountant, faxing him a copy of the “summons” (are you talking about a court order?). You normally have 30 days to respond to any IRS correspondence. Talk to an accountant, if you don’t have one, find one. I’m talking about a CPA here, not your local Wal-Mart tax preparer. They’ll cost you about $100 an hour – shouldn’t take more than that to determine your situation and what your best response would be. I would not just go along with the IRS! I have butted heads with them and I have tried to deal with them directly on certain matters. My accountant has far better results and is well worth the money!!!
