Question: Penalty For Not Filing California State Tax?
For 2002 to 2004 I didn’t file any of my taxes. It was stupid I know. I contacted the IRS and was told that I didn’t need to file for 2003 and 2004, just 2002. Also, I don’t owe anything after doing my taxes, just regret for not being able to collect my refund.
What about my California State Tax though? I know that the state is in communications with IRS so since the IRS has my address to contact me the state probably would have done so if I owed them any money right?
What’s the penalty for not filing in California? I couldn’t find it online. Also, what’s the interest rate for penalties?
Lastly, I didn’t need to file for 2003 and 2004 with the IRS, does that usually mean the same for the state tax as well?
I tried calling the California tax dept today but I couldn’t get through each time.
Answer: See here to see if you’d need to file CA tax return:

Penalty rates:

If you are expected to have refunds in those years, then you should be okay, but make note of the statue of limitation – on the federal, for example, if you file after 3 years of the original due rate, you’d lose your refunds.
