Question: IRS Form W9 Google Adsense and Backup WithHolding Check or Uncheck?
I have a job and makes 24,000 yearly.
I also have a Google Adsense account, which I make close to $800 monthly. On the IRS Form W-9, should I check where it says “Exempt from backup withholding” ?
Please explain in detail.I live in California.
Answer: There is no check box that says “Exempt from backup withholding” on Form W-9. There is a check box that says “Exempt payee.”
You ARE exempt from backup withholding unless the IRS has notified you that you are not. However if you are an individual filing Schedule C you are NOT an exempt payee.
If the IRS notified you that you are subject to backup withholding then you’d scratch out the statement in line 2 of Part II regarding backup withholding before signing the form.
