Question: When you apply for a job with the IRS as a field agent or special agent…..?

they do a tax audit that you agree to be performed for employment. How far back do they go, and should unreported ebay income from a few years ago be a worry in this process?

Answer: Anyone applying for Employment with the IRS has their Tax filing history reviewed. They look that all returns for up to 10 years are filed, whether you left income off of a return, Basically were you compliant in filing your returns. They also do a detailed background check and you are required to be fingerprinted.

Question: California Sales tax refund for international tourists?

I heard somewhere that if you are a tourist and visit California (or any other state) you can present your receipts at the airport and get a refund for the sales tax. Is this true?? where in the airport would that be? an IRS office??? Im departing from LAX…tnx for all your answers!!!

Answer: No, sorry, but there is no sales tax refund offered in the US, unlike the VAT refunds in many other countries. If for no other reason than there are 50 separate states with 50 different sets of laws on sales taxes, not to mention literally thousands of local jurisdictions with their fingers in the till. It would be impossible to manage.

Question: 1099-MISC form and Full Time Student Question and IRS collection of Money?

My gf has reecived her sole small income on a 1099-MIsc form for 2006 – less than $20k. She obviously is going to have to pay taxes on it and will wind up owing money. She was a full time student last year and is full time student this year and actually does not even work anymore – she just lives off of school loans. Can the IRS collect money off someone who is a full time student, unemployed and living off government loans?
To those have have answered below – I figured as much, so then as a follow up – How long does the IRS give to pay back the taxes on a payment plan?

Answer: She can either pay it now, or owe it to them with interest. They’ll set up a payment plan. The length of time to pay it will depend on her ability to pay, and her ability to negotiate.
