Address To Send IRS Payments

Question: I got a letter from the IRS! HELP!!!?

My ex husband and I had to file our taxes together for the 2005 year, I didn’t turn in my W2’s and now the IRS sent me a letter with both our names addressed on it. We filed taxes last year using only his W2. Who are they going after for the money? I don’t have the money now to even make payments to them and I want to know can I just not respond and just wait this out till this years taxes and let them seize my check? Help my deadline date is Nov. 21.

Answer: They will try to “go after” both of you if you filed a joint return. Not responding is not the best course of action.

They should have sent you information in the notice that discussed payment plans. You can set up a payment plan for the amount due; it can be either an amount you send each month, or they can withhold it from your paycheck.

If you’re expecting a refund for this year’s taxes, you can tell them that. Again, the best course is to talk to them or write them explaining the situation.

Question: What IRS office should I contact to verify that the address for my daughter is correct on their records?

Everyone in the family received US tax return forms for 2006 and 2007 except my daughter who is now age 19. All of us live at the same addess in a foreign country.

I suspect identity theft. How can I ensure that that the IRS has her correct address and that 2008 tax forms will be sent to her and not to someone else who may be using her name and SS number?

Answer: Your daughter must be the one to Contact IRS and verify that her information is correct. YOU can’t call for her.

Question: Cancelling an EIN?

I got my EIN in May 2008 and have yet to get any business, how do I cancel my EIN? Do I simply write the IRS a letter saying I didnt make any money and want to cancel my business? and if so which location do I sent it to? the main office in Ohio or the CT one because I live in MA?

Answer: Here is the answer from the IRS website: www.irs.go

Canceling an EIN – Closing Your Account

Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.

The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. However, if you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account. The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise.

To close your business account, write to us at: Internal Revenue Service, Cincinnati, Ohio 45999 and state the reason you wish to close your account. If you have a copy of the EIN Assignment Notice that was issued when your EIN was assigned, include that when you write. Otherwise, be sure to include the complete legal name of the entity, the EIN, and the business address.

Note: If (1) you made a Federal Tax Deposit or other Federal tax payment, (2) are liable for any Business Taxes, or (3) the IRS has notified you that a business tax return is due, you must file the appropriate tax return(s) before we can close your account. See Closing a Business Checklist for other actions you may need to take.
