Question: Where can I find a current (2/2008) IRS tax “booklet”?

I’m filing my taxes online through the IRS website and need to find a “booklet” that is referenced in my 1040EZ form. References to this “booklet” refer to it only as “the booklet”, not something with a title that’d be easy to find. I was wondering if anybody else had a similar problem while they were filing, and might know the name of it, or where to find one (online, if possible).

Thanks.

Answer: Look for “1040EZ instructions” on the IRS website.

Question: How can i send an email to the IRS?

My ex-wife filed us married and together after forging my name. She had already filed for separation, and didnt have a power of attorney for taxes till she forged my signature while i was deployed to Iraq. I had already filed separately, but she went back and filed as together. She owed money to the IRS from before we were married in the first place. Anyhow, a California Judge ruled in my favor ordering she pay the money owed to the treasury and i was not at all responsible. I was in the Marine Corps, my taxes always get payed and i always get a refund. This was decreed in 2004 from the 2002 tax year. I was deployed to Iraq when were separated and she forged my name to file us again. Well, copies of the divorce were sent to the IRS but they still coninue to try to get money from me and im tired of it. I have sent them an innocent spuse form and talked to them several times on the phone. Im fed up and would like to sue the IRS if possible, but im in Germany now, to call is expensive.

Answer: You’ll never get anywhere suing the IRS. And e-mails are sure to get a non-response. You’d better communicate in writing via certified mail.

Question: I think my check to the IRS was lost! What should I do?

So I owed about $15 in interest to the IRS for a late tax payment. I filled out the little slip they sent with the CP letter and mailed the check on August 6th. I made sure I had put:

Taypayer Identification Number/ Security Number, the Tax form (1040EZ) and tax year (December 31st, 2008 as stated on the CP letter).

The letter said the $15 had to be paid by August 9th. Today is August 10th, and the USPS still isn’t showing that it was delivered!

I had used Certified Mail as a precaution so it says on the slip that my mail was postmarked on August 6th! I’m freaking out! What if someone stole the check?! What if the IRS lost the mail and didn’t sign the green card?!

Should I cancel the check and mail another one, explaining that I had mailed the original one on time but it was lost?

I’m so stressed right now…

Answer: USPS online tracking is pretty bad, so odds are it got there, just isn’t showing yet. If you asked for a delivery confirmation, that often takes a week or two to get back. Quit worrying. If you can’t just relax about it, call the IRS and ask if they got it, but even if they don’t have it showing in their records yet, they probably have it and it’s just sitting somewhere waiting to be entered into their system.

If it DID somehow get lost and they never turn it up, the worst thing that would happen is they’d send you another letter, and that would probably ask for $15.83 or something. Relax, it’s OK. Really.

Question: Complicated question about Social Security recipient and stimulus check?

I helped my grandmother file the forms necessary for her to receive a stimulus payment this year. We followed the IRS’ instructions to the letter. My grandfather died in July of 07 and they told us to put his name and SS number on the form, along with hers, put a combined total of their Social Security income (it’s not SSI) together and have my grandmother sign it, with “Surviving Spouse” written underneath her signature. They also told us to put his name, and date of death at the top of the form, along with STIMULUS PAYMENT at the very top.

When checking the “Where’s My Stimulus” section of the IRS site, should I enter his SSN or hers? We listed his information on the form first, but made sure they knew he died in the middle of the year.

Another question: we put her banking account information on the 1040A and filed it well before the tax deadline. Do you think they will direct deposit her check or will they send her a paper check? Any comments or insight is appreciated.

Answer: It sounds like you did everything right on the form.

Since his ss# was on the form first, use that in checking the website for info.

Since they didn’t have a refund, they might get a paper check in the mail rather than direct deposit even if you put their bank account info on their return.

IRS extends filing deadline to April 18

The Internal Revenue Service today opened the 2011 tax filing season by announcing that taxpayers have until April 18 to file their tax returns. The IRS reminded taxpayers impacted by recent tax law changes that using e-file is the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds.
