IRS 1099 Forms Free

Question: Should I contact the IRS?

My wife and I won a Dell Laptop from ePrize last summer. We were told that although the prize was free we would have to pay a tax on it.

Well…it has come time to pay our taxes and we have not received our required 1099 tax form from ePrize. I have called and left four messages with them and they have not gotten back to us.

My question is: when is a 1099 tax form required to be mailed and received? And: should I contact the IRS? Are they in violation of any laws since I have not recieved the 1099 tax form yet?

Answer: You must report the fair market value of the prize on line 21, Form 1040; the 1099 is not necessary to file only helpful.

Question: What are good free places to get good advice on nonresident tax?

I’m usually pretty good at deciphering the IRS forms and publications for individual taxation, but have some simple dilemmas that leave my stymied. H&R block doesn’t know jack squat, and I get various answers from accountants who don’t seem to care much. I can always go to the IRS directly, but it tends to be my last resort and besides, the people who pick up the phone there don’t necessarily have accurate answers either.
I’m an individual who earns a modest income and am not gonna spend hundreds of $$’s on a big-shot tax expert.

So far I posted at taxforum.us, are you familiar with any other good online resources to go and ask?

Answer: If you are non-resident alien, start by reading IRS publication 519 and 515.

If you are living abroad, start by reading IRS publication 54 and 514.
